Nothing says West Texas likes a Texas Tech and Dallas Cowboys-themed sports bar better, outfitted with more than 10 TVs and a big screen hanging above walls filled with jerseys and memorabilia. Parked in the Mall at the corner of Garfield Street and Loop 250 in North Midland, Champs Sports Bar has officially opened, full of excitement and hope.
Manager Christina Alonzo told The Reporter-Telegram that the establishment opened in Lubbock in November 2019. However, the pandemic forced a closure in May 2020. Now mom and pop aim to bring the same energetic energy and a family space. to Midland for the second round.
Fast facts
Location: 4610 N. Garfield Street
Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., 18+ after 10 p.m., Monday to Sunday (subject to change)
Happy Hour: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Hot bites
On brand with their Texas sports team theme, Champs embraces all parts of the game by renaming their foods. For example, entrees are known as “First Down’s”, salads as “Putting Greens”, large plates as “Homerun Platters”, sides as “Benchwarmers”, and children’s menu under the name “Little Raiders”.
Some menu items include a mound of onion rings and a ranch known as the “Olympic Rings,” a fried chicken sandwich dipped in homemade honey butter, a 12-ounce “Rockhound Ribeye,” macaroni with cheese, fried okra and corn dogs for the kids.
Still, Alonzo said customers can’t come to Champs without trying on two items. The first one? “Cheesehead cheese sticks.” Although they may look like a typical mozzarella stick, Alonzo said their light spicy kick sets them above the rest, and the creamy ranch sauce is the icing on the cake. The last? One of Champs house burgers. Handcrafted daily with fresh ingredients, these patties are thick on Texas Toast and can be found under “Big Ol’ Cheeseburger” or “Patty ‘Mahomes’ Melt.”
Cold sips
With a full bar, the red and black establishment offers everything one could want. Happy hour, which runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., includes $1 off draft beers. Looking for a local touch? Have a glass of Midland Logger from Tall City Brewing Co.
Alonzo also said the crew hopes the frozen machines will be up and running this week, which will add frozen margaritas, pina coladas and daiquiris to the list.
General atmosphere
A few aspects set Champs apart from chain grills, such as Buffalo Wild Wings or Pluckers. It is first and foremost a family business. Strong community ties make Midland unique, but sometimes Midlanders only flock to the big names. Supporting local restaurants keeps the city fresh, innovative, and populated with healthy people and hard workers. Next? The staff. Alonzo, from Midland herself, leads a down-to-earth team of friendly and helpful staff, showing up gracefully even on opening night. Finally, the slightly smaller layout allows patrons to have a more intimate dining experience, something typically absent from sports bars. Even through the rivalry, the Red Raiders, Longhorns, Miners and Aggies can find a sense of comfort and familiarity in the four-walled building.
Notes: Champs hosts many college and NFL game days. A list with dates and times can be found on the restaurant tables.
Additionally, the restaurant is always looking to fill team slots. Applications are available at www.champsbarmidland.com

Former Memphis Grizzlies player Mike Miller brings his sports bar to DeSoto County.
Miller plans to open a third Let It Fly Sports bar and restaurant in Silo Square, Southaven’s mixed-use development. The restaurant will offer golf stimulator berries as well as food and beverages.
“We’re really excited to have Mike Miller bring his sports bar concept to Silo,” said Brian Hill, developer of Silo Square. “It’s going to be really unique, a pretty safe addition for Silo.”
miller first Let It Fly sports bar opened in 2019 at 9091 Poplar in Germantown, where customers can rent both Full Swing Golf Simulator bays by the hour. In March this year, plans were announced to open a second Let it Fly sports bar in the Lake District, a 160-acre mixed-use space being developed in Lakeland.
“Everybody loves a sports bar,” Hill said. “But the golf part is just something we don’t have here, Southaven had hoped we would have TopGolf, but they ended up exit Germantown Road. But it’s a really cool golf-themed concept that’s a lot like TopGolf, but maybe even a little better. There are so many different golf courses to choose from that you can play on the stimulator and it is heated and cooled, and you are not playing in the rain. It’s gonna be huge. It’s a good build.”
The Silo Square location will be built in the corner lot to the right of the south entrance, directly across from the silo. This was the last batch Hill had available on Getwell. Plans are being drawn up and will be presented to the Southaven Planning Commission on August 29. Hill sees no reason why it won’t be approved.
The restaurant plans to break new ground this fall with an opening date of summer 2023.
“When I started Silo Square, I had a vision of what I wanted it to be when it was finished, and once we started creating it and people recognized and saw that I was going to create the vision that I talked about, people started calling me,” Hill said. “So Mike Miller called me, I didn’t call him. And he wanted to be part of Silo Square, and we’ve been talking about it now for probably five to six months. Once we started talking about it, we quickly got him under contract.”
Silo Square currently has a variety of businesses, such as Vampire Penguin, City Hall Cheesecake, a women’s shop called Dappled, and Staks Pancake Kitchen.
Miller was a popular shooter for nearly seven seasons with the Grizzlies, from midway through the 2002-03 season through 2008 and again in 2013-14.
After ending his NBA career with the Denver Nuggets in 2017, Miller spent two seasons as an assistant coach and scout with the University of Memphis Tigers. He then spent a season as the head basketball coach at Houston High School in Germantown and in 2021, coached the team to its very first national basketball championship.
Hill hopes this name recognition can help Silo Square with regards to the development’s charity events. Several events are held at Silo Square throughout the year to raise funds for local and national charities. A car show will be held in October to benefit St. Jude and every year they hold a Christmas tree sale. Last year, Silo Square donated a quarter of a million dollars, Hill said. Much of the money has gone to Ukraine this year, Hill said, while half of the money remains local.
“So to have Mike involved and the draw that Mike can bring is huge,” Hill said. “And that’s what I thought, right off the bat when I started talking to Mike. And I talked to him about it, I said, ‘Now, Mike, to be part of Silo, you must be part of all the charitable things we do. And he was all in, so that’s what excites me the most to be honest with you. The restaurant is really cool, but having Mike to help us give back to our community is huge for me.

When the owners of Kitty’s Sports Grill went to open on Super Bowl Sunday, there was a line that stretched the entire block.
Billy Watson, who runs the place with his wife, Betty, described a stark contrast to how business had been for Kitty’s the previous two years. The pandemic changed the way business was done, Watson said. However, with one of the Bengals’ strongest seasons in decades, Kitty’s has been given a refresh – not just a boost in business, but a fresh new mural.
The old mural has always been a popular spot for photos, both by patrons and other Bengals fans who drop by on game days. But it was time to freshen it up as it was chipping and peeling from the weather on the building.
Enter the new post-Super Bowl look on the side of Kitty’s building facing Elm Street. A stronger tiger for a stronger season, which Watson hopes will attract more customers.
“I just wanted something that had energy, that was simple and clean,” Thomas said. “I didn’t want it to be like a lot of stuff all over the place. I wanted to be pretty direct and support the Bengals season, and just support that going forward.”

TJ’s Sports Bar & Grill is the perfect place to enjoy great food, drinks and fun with Coors Light, Blue Moon and Vizzy specials! Today we eat and drink with bartender Kelli Pang and Jacob Vela, General Manager of TJ’s Sports Bar & Grill.
Originally, the goal was to provide a pre-game destination place for women before heading out for a night on the town. We bring an ever-growing list of women-owned businesses. Our customers have access to a variety of exciting new products and services, and vendors have access to TJ’s incredible customer base, all from the comfort of air conditioning and surrounded by great food and beer.
“We offer an incredible array of restaurant-quality fare in a 5,000 square foot sports bar, where you can catch live sporting events like the UFC, Bellator, NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA Season Pass and ESPN PLUS in comfort. family-style seating. Food aside, it really comes down to the staff and our loyal clientele. I think we’ve done a good job of recreating that “everyone knows your name” vibe. It’s like going to a friend’s house for a party, but with better booze. We are first and foremost a restaurant, so families are welcome. We actively encourage making this your event venue. We have ample parking, as well as great food and ice cold Coors on tap. All the ingredients for a good time.
They offer the Coors draft as an everyday beer at a low price and have added Blue Moon to the draft at the Happy Hour price. Vizzy’s are also on sale this month for $3!

[ad_1]
New York City has always had about twenty passionate sports fans who follow professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey and proudly wear their Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Giants, Jets, Rangers caps. And they often gather at various sports bars to watch games.
But Denis Ladouceur, a Canadian and former chief operating officer of a Wall Street firm and transplanted New Yorker, felt the city lacked a primary meeting place: a dedicated sports bar for hockey fans. . In December 2021, he opened The Canuck on Ninth Avenue in Chelsea to appeal to the legion of New York-area hockey fans who follow the New York Rangers, New York Islanders and New York Devils. Jersey as well as fellow Canadians who are fans of the Montreal Canadiens or Toronto Maple Leaf.
He said The Canuck appeals to a wide demographic, including “Canadians, city expats and visiting Canadians, hockey fans, sports fans and locals looking for a pub.” clean and friendly neighborhood.
Although professional ice hockey is Canada’s national sport, Ladouceur noted that “Madison Square Garden has over 20,000 fans at every Rangers game.” Additionally, most sports bars favor baseball, football, and basketball over hockey.
“The city desperately needed a place where hockey was the first priority, on the big screens, where hockey fans could congregate and watch hockey together,” he said.
New York’s first hockey-focused sports bar generated word of mouth, drawing crowds to watch hockey games and establishing a niche, but loyal following.
When Ladouceur quit his job in finance during the pandemic, the time was right to take the leap to fulfill his dream. With no restaurant experience, Ladouceur did his “homework” by meeting with a host of restaurant insiders to “better understand the costs, drawbacks, benefits and requirements associated with the industry.”
He wanted to open the hockey bar in Chelsea because of its proximity to Chelsea Piers and its ice rink. He says there are about 1,500 people involved in his amateur hockey league and many of them go to the Canuck for dinner or a beer, “almost every night,” he said.
He hired a catering consultant who pointed him in the right direction to hire the right staff, front and back of house, design the menu and identify the food vendors needed.
Memories of the Canuck transcend hockey and venture into Canadian culture. He pointed out that “there are many photos of iconic Canadians, Canadian sports moments where consumers can taste their Canadian beers and eat poutine (fries and cheese covered in gravy). Everyone orders poutine,” not just Canadians, he said.
He financed the opening of The Canuck with his own personal funds supplemented by investors who were friends and family.
The restaurant is 2,000 square feet, filled with twelve tables, accommodating 65 seats. The bar has 15 stools and there is outdoor seating with three or four tables, for eight to a dozen people.
Ladouceur says the menu specializes in burgers, club sandwiches and Caesar salads. It also offers several specialty cocktails such as the Caesar, the Canadian version of the Bloody Mary, made with Clamato juice instead of tomato juice and the Maple Old Fashioned, a classic whiskey but made with maple syrup.
The menu includes Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Chicken Tenders, Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Impossible Burger. Draft beers include a number of Canadian brands, including Labbatt Blue, Collective Arts, as well as American and Irish beers.
“We wanted the food to be appropriate for a Canadian pub. I don’t want to recreate agrifood but offer simple, quality food,” he explains.
Business exploded in late May and early June when the hometown New York Rangers made the playoffs, beating the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes before falling in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning, who had won the last two Stanley Cups. “The bar was at full capacity for every Rangers playoff game and the energy from the crowd and the games was incredible,” he said.
Ladouceur used a variety of strategies to publicize the Canuck opener, including targeted ads on designated Canadian groups on Facebook and Instagram and sponsorship of local hockey teams near Chelsea Piers.
When the pro hockey season ends in late June, he plans to host events such as birthday parties and work parties, weekly trivia nights that will bring regulars in, up until the next National Hockey League season begins in the fall.
He expects the summer to be slower, though he also envisions Yankee, Mets and Blue Jay fans keeping the bar open. It introduced brunch on Saturday and Sunday and added more outdoor tables.
When I visited The Canuck on the night of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the joint was popping. Ladouceur gears up for the crowd of hockey fans, dressed in a Moosehead Brewery t-shirt and looking relaxed but busy.
The bar is strewn with Canadian and hockey memorabilia with photos of Canadian-born celebrities like Celine Dion, Martin Short, John Candy and William Shatner, and hockey cards for the 1994 Rangers team, its most recent winning team of the Stanley Cup.
He estimates that about 20% of his clientele is Canadian. “Canadians come through, see the flag and have to stop, and there are more Canadians in the neighborhood than you might think,” he said.
When asked if he will be showing the Yankees game that night, Ladouceur replies, “We’re a hockey bar, so it’s going to be the Stanley Cup on all the screens. The Yankees will have to wait until the official end of the NHL season.
He said the keys to his future success are “consistency, making sure we maintain the quality of our food and retaining our staff, because of the vibe and energy they create”.
Ladouceur works hard but has fun during his first six months as the owner of the city’s first exclusive hockey bar. “I want it to embody the Canadian spirit, to be a Canadian bar so that when Canadians dine out, they feel at home,” he explained.

A beloved Cincinnati sports bar is reopening, thanks to Ignite Entertainment.
The team behind local establishments such as The View at Shires’ Garden, Che, The Birdcage and many more are resurrecting downtown’s In Between Tavern, located across from Great American Ball Park.
Originally open from 1969 to 2016, In Between Tavern was sold and turned into a bistro for several years, before that operation closed in 2021 and Ignite took over.
“Bringing an iconic destination like In Between back to life is a dream,” Ignite Entertainment’s Juan Imeroni said in a statement. “It’s everything I love about this city, in an incredible location, and we will serve the home team and visitors, as they have done here before, for over fifty years.”
The In Between Tavern is located across from the Great American Ball Park.
The 4,500 square foot bar has been modernized and features a large patio, as well as a garage door to create indoor/outdoor space. Ignite also added an online menu with the sports line of the bar.
The In Between Tavern will serve what they call “Cincinnati-style dogs” and “Ball Park-style dogs”, sourced from local butchers including Avril-Bleh, Wassler’s and Redden’s. Other dishes include smashburgers — with single, double, triple or “home run” (aka four) patties — as well as sandwiches, salads, wraps and empanadas from sister restaurant Che.
“We’ve made some improvements and made some adjustments, but otherwise we wanted to preserve all of the sports history of Cincinnati that was here before, add to it and make it a place where people can enjoy what’s on the walls and tables around them just as much as they enjoy food and drink,” Imeroni said.
The In Between Tavern is located at 307 Sycamore Street downtown. It is scheduled to open July 11 and plans to serve lunch and dinner seven days a week. More information: inbetweentavern.com.

For years, Nick Marquez has been transforming old houses into bars and restaurants in the Schertz-Cibolo district. But for his new business, a pet-friendly bar called The Hidden Grove, he’s doing it from scratch.
Still under construction, Marquez said he hopes to open Hidden Grove in late June, no later than July 4.
Located on Main Street in Schertz, next to the Purple Pig BBQ and about a 100-foot walk from Bar House, which Marquez opened in 2018, The Hidden Grove will be a mix of concepts. It will be a concert hall, both a sports bar and a meeting place in the garden.
Most seating will be outdoors on the half-acre grounds, which has an outdoor stage for music and various seating areas scattered under metal roofs and a canopy of shade trees that inspired the bar name. When it gets too hot, guests can sit inside in air-conditioned comfort.
“The goal is to provide a very relaxed environment where people can have a drink and enjoy each other’s company, but we’ll also have live entertainment, lots of TVs and we’ll show UFC fights,” he said. Marquez said. “This is my first project built from the frame, so it allowed a lot of flexibility in building this one. It’s going to be neat.
On ExpressNews.com: Bar House a Schertz watering hole that lives up to its name
The bar will feature a large wall of taps and will feature a special cocktail menu being developed to accompany all standard spirits. Marquez hopes customers will bring their four-legged family members for a drink and a bite to eat from the food trucks that will be on site over the weekend or the Purple Pig BBQ next door.
“I hope the people of San Antonio make the trip to Schertz because we have a lot to offer here that a lot of people don’t know about,” said Marquez, who also owns the Old Main Ice House in Cibolo, about 3 miles away. .

A second location of the Sandy Springs gaming and entertainment restaurant, Battle and Brew, will open next year in Battery Atlanta, Cobb County.
Located next to the resort’s Ph’east mini-food hall, Battle and Brew will feature a full bar and restaurant serving pub fare, as well as TVs showing movies and PC computers and game consoles, including Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox, for individuals. and group play.

Battle and Brew joins three other gaming restaurants similar to the drums. Punch Bowl Social is a two-story, 25,000-square-foot behemoth featuring shuffleboard, foosball, eight bowling lanes, an arcade and karaoke rooms, and a restaurant and bar. When it opened in 2018, Punch Bowl Social’s early reviews included calling it “Dave & Busters on Steroids”.
Just beyond Braves Truist Park at the Battery, the two-story Sports and Social sports bar and restaurant features a 30-foot LED screen and multiple big-screen TVs tuned to various games throughout the day. Sports and Social also offers skeeball, table tennis and air hockey tables.
For those who prefer golf to baseball, football and bowling, the Good Games sports bar and restaurant, next to Punch Bowl Social, includes TopGolf swing suites and interactive play bays for zombie dodgeball, football and hockey.
A second location of the Howell Mill Road Cultivate Food and Coffee breakfast and brunch restaurant is opening this spring under OrthoAtlanta in the battery. Unlike the Howell Mill Cafe location, the Battery Restaurant has a full bar and serves dinner. New locations of Mac Mcgee’s Irish Pub and Atlanta Savi Provisions Market also recently opened at The Battery.
