New ‘Rule the Jungle’ mural at Kitty’s Sports Bar for Bengals season

When the owners of Kitty’s Sports Grill went to open on Super Bowl Sunday, there was a line that stretched the entire block.

Billy Watson, who runs the place with his wife, Betty, described a stark contrast to how business had been for Kitty’s the previous two years. The pandemic changed the way business was done, Watson said. However, with one of the Bengals’ strongest seasons in decades, Kitty’s has been given a refresh – not just a boost in business, but a fresh new mural.

The old mural has always been a popular spot for photos, both by patrons and other Bengals fans who drop by on game days. But it was time to freshen it up as it was chipping and peeling from the weather on the building.

Enter the new post-Super Bowl look on the side of Kitty’s building facing Elm Street. A stronger tiger for a stronger season, which Watson hopes will attract more customers.

Kitty is ordered Benjamin Thomas (@daystarart), a local artist who frequently paints murals around Cincinnati, to create the new part. They went with the most aggressive tiger design, Thomas said, of the three he came up with.

“I just wanted something that had energy, that was simple and clean,” Thomas said. “I didn’t want it to be like a lot of stuff all over the place. I wanted to be pretty direct and support the Bengals season, and just support that going forward.”
